One must wonder how beer existed before refrigerators. Surely in the deep of winter some would leave barrels of beer outdoors to cool? Fortunately, in the modern age, refrigeration is an every-day technology. Nobody today wonders how their beer will become cold—the answer is obvious. Indeed refrigerators are one of the most widespread domestic (and commercial, and industrial) items in the world. At the basis of this revolutionary item is a simple concept: cold inhibits bacterial growth. Refrigerators thus allow your food to remain at a constantly lowered temperature—staving off the inevitable entropic forces that enable the development of mold and eventually rot any and all organic material.

So what are the features you should look for in refrigerators? Automatic defrosting is an absolute must (and is usually built into any modern refrigerators.) This feature allows the cooling coils in your refrigerator to remain frost-free (and never develop ice) by using periodic heat to stave off its formation. Another great feature no good refrigerator should go without is a power failure indicator. This feature informs the fridge’s owner if there have been any power outages, what the highest temperature inside the refrigerator was, and whether any of the food has been deemed compromised by the power outage.

Some fridges offer an ice and water dispenser—this feature adds a whole new dimension to refrigerators. A built-in ice caddy can be useful as well—this helps the ice-maker stay flowing and stores excess ice for every day usage. Some refrigerators even have televisions built into them—the future is coming at us fast!

Even without all of these luxurious features, refrigerators are an absolutely crucial element in our daily modern lives—no one should have to live without one; especially if they love beer.
