A cabinet is an integral part of any well equipped and organized home. Regardless of a person’s lifestyle, a cabinet can be a crucial organizational aid, facilitating storage and day-to-day activities.
Not only can a cabinet be used for storage: they can also provide display or work spaces with other practical purposes. A shorter cabinet with a polished surface, for example, can provide a display area in your living room, or a work surface – such as a counter-top – in your kitchen. Likewise, in an office, a computer desk cabinet not only organizes and protects office equipment, but can also function as an office desk.
Although a cabinet is usually built in a simple box-shaped form, they can be modified into all shapes and sizes to meat the specific needs of your home. Depending on space availability and practical needs, a cabinet can stand alone as a piece of furniture, be attached or built into a wall (such as a medicine cabinet in the bathroom) or even built with wheels, allowing supplies to be handy at all times and all places.
Built-in cabinets are more commonly custom made for a particular situation or position (they can also be wall hung or suspended) while freestanding ones are more readily available as off-the-shelf items.
Aesthetic considerations can also come into play when choosing a cabinet for your home. A glass door cabinet allows you to display specific belongings, while a closed-door cabinet works to do just the opposite. Furthermore, although typically made of wood, cabinets today are also built with newer and synthetic materials. A cabinet made of composite material or plastic, for example, provide a different look and can be more convenient for a humid place such as the bathroom, or the kitchen, where spills are a constant.
Cabinets are a crucial part of any house, but they undoubtedly can express more then simple utility in your home.
